Start with a new 10" x 8" 300DPI, transparent background
canvas.
TIP: For lines, gradients
and brush -- hold the shift key down or hit shift key @ end before
letting go to make it straight.
Do a Save as you go!
Create top & bottom border:
1. To create the top & bottom black borders across the
collage:
Bottom border: Add a new layer then click on Create new fill or
adjustment layer > select Solid Color (black).
Click on the Layer Mask thumbnail ; select the Gradient tool
and using a black/white gradient > drag it
down bit more than
3/4 of collage
Repeat with another new layer of solid black to create the
top border. Drag gradient
up
bit more than 7/8 of collage.
The border layers will be above the photos, color layers and
long narrow vertical rectangular layers but below the
horizontal lines and text.
2. We are going to "paint out" some the extra gradient
using a large soft brush about 400 to 500 px, with Foreground color set to Black
and Background color set to white. On the top border
layer mask thumbnail paint out all but the top 7/8 or so.
On the bottom border layer layer mask thumbnail paint out
all but the bottom 3/4 or so. On both keep the border
edge soft.
Adding photos:
3. Open your photos and using the crop tool set
to height 8 in x 2 in
wide and 300DPI, select the part of the photo you want in the collage.
Copy and paste or drag into collage. Using the Move tool, move to about where you want it
(it can be moved again later).
Repeat for the other 2 long & narrow photos.
Adding color over photos:
4. To add color over photos: copy that photo layer -- do a
control click on the layer thumbnail of the photo copy
layer; then Edit > Fill Selection -- set to
Use: Color ; Blending Mode: Normal ; Opacity: 100% hit OK.
Then change this layer from Normal to Color and lower the
Opacity to about 70%. Repeat for other 2 photos using
different colors.

If needed move the photos and their colors to where they
look equal across the collage, spaced apart a bit. Like in
the sample.
Adding vertical lines:
5. Use the Rectangular tool to add a long and very narrow
vertical black rectangles to fit and just a bit overlap the
narrow photos. Add a drop shadow layer style. Make 3 copies
of this layer (4 total) and move one to the right edge, move one to the
beginning of the 1st narrow photo and the 3rd one between
the 2 photos you don't have one set yet. These rectangle
layers should be above the photo and color layers but below
the top & bottom borders.
6. Add a larger 8 in x about 4 in photo, this layer should
be below the other photos.
Adding horizontal lines:
7. Use the line tool to add horizontal line about 25 px
wide. Can be any color but black. Add a layer mask to the
line layer. Select the Gradient tool
and use a black/white gradient > drag it to the right bit
about 1/4 of the collage. Make 2 copies of this layer
and move the same areas in the sample.
8.
Add your text, select any font you like,
text color dark gray and use a soft white or light gray outer
glow layer style. Move to where you like it and done!
The borders layers will be above the photo, color layers and
long narrow vertical rectangular layers but below the
horizontal lines and text. Move to where you like it and
done.
Be sure to save it!
These instructions for those familiar with Photoshop
Elements and can be done in Photoshop too.
NOTE: For personal use only and not to be sold.
Althought I did personally design this collage for my
daughter, I do also design templates for Templates Unlimited
by ArtisticAction.com and they offer this as a template set
called
Pro Lines, in comes in different sizes.
